Details: Thanks for the science input Marc, you do seem to know a lot about chemistry etc. (no sarcasm) I can't be the only person with this issue. Well I know I'm not as other people up here face the same problem. Nobody seems to have a solution other than "mix less stuff" though.

Why is it that baking soda inhibits rust whilst table salt

Details: Location. Sydney. Posts. 13,859. You are introducing an unknown variable, soil. I would answer that table salt in the soil will definitely accelerate the rusting process. Baking soda who knows. Will probably do no harm but it depends from the PH of soil and it's composition. Steel in the ground will rust unless galvanised and painted.

Science is about looking at the world, looking at the current explanation, deciding that the world is wrong and you are right, and then going out and proving it. In real science the status quo is the null hypothesis to be rejected, not confirmed.
